WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 win over Conference USA foe Charlotte at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. After the Green and Gold (11-9) captured the doubles point, the program honored its three-member senior class of
Christian Cargill,
Lars de Boer and
Alec Miller for their contribution over the last four seasons, including helping the team to the 2015 CAA Championship. W&M won five of the six singles matches over the 49ers (12-14) to claim the senior class's 53rd win over the last four years.
The Tribe claimed the doubles point to open the match for the fifth time in the last seven contests. Sophomore
Brenden Volk and freshman
Michael Chen raced out to a 5-0 lead on the way to a dominating 6-1 win over Benjamin Wayand and Leonardo Menezes at the No. 2 spot. Cargill and freshman
Louis Newman gave the Tribe the 1-0 cushion with a 6-2 victory over Oriol Puig Forne and Siem Fenne at No. 3.
Like the doubles victories, the singles wins came in rapid succession. Newman and Talcott increased the Tribe advantage to 3-0 with wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Newman topped Constandinos Christoforou, 6-2, 6-3, for his team-leading 17th win of the year, while Talcott picked up his 16th victory, upending Menezes, 6-3, 7-5.
Volk and de Boer extended singles winning streaks to cement the Green and Gold victory. Volk won his fourth match in a row at the No. 6 slot, posting his first career clinching win thanks to a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Siem Fenne. de Boer tallied his third-straight victory at No. 5, downing Puig Forne, 7-5, 6-3.
Miller rounded out the Tribe victory with a come-from-behind three-set win at the No. 2 spot. Wayand won the opening set, 7-5, before the Tribe senior rallied to force a decisive third with a 6-4 triumph. The Charlotte freshman jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the third-set super tiebreaker, before Miller won six of the final eight points on the way to a 10-8 victory.
