RICHMOND, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team suffered a 4-1 setback at in-state rival VCU on Wednesday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. Sophomore Brenden Volk claimed the Tribe's (10-9) lone point on the day with his third-straight victory at the No. 6 singles post.
 
Senior Christian Cargill and freshman Louis Newman led at the No. 3 doubles position and were close to closing out the spot for the Tribe, but the match was abandoned as the Rams (12-8) won at the top two positions to secure the initial point. VCU increased its advantage to 3-0 with straight-set singles wins at No. 3 and No. 4.
 
Volk raced out to a set advantage at No. 6, blanking Timo Zgraggen, 6-0. The Tribe sophomore evened his singles mark at 3-3 on the year with a 7-5 triumph in the second and narrowed the margin to 3-1.
 
The Rams put the contest away with a victory at No. 1. Arvid Noren rallied for a tiebreaker win in the first set against Cargill, before securing the VCU victory with a 6-3 triumph in the second.
 
Freshman Sebastian Quiros won his opening set at No. 5 in a tiebreaker over Ignacio Rivero Crespo, but the match was abandoned with the team result decided. Senior Alec Miller rallied from a set deficit to force a decisive third against Vitor Lima at No. 2, but the tilt was also stopped.
 
The Tribe hosts Charlotte in its final home match of the year at the Millie West Tennis Facility on Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m. W&M will honor its trio of seniors Christian Cargill, Lars de Boer and Alec Miller during the match. The Tribe closes out the regular season at No. 34 Old Dominion on Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m.
