PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior
Abby Rendle recorded a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double, but Elon knocked the William & Mary women's basketball team out of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the second-straight season, 67-50, on Thursday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Phoenix (23-7) scored 22 second-quarter points to take control of the contest, before hitting 66.7 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes to hold off the Green and Gold (16-14).
The Tribe took its first lead of the game behind an 8-2 run, spanning the end of the first half and start of the second. W&M scored the final four points of the first quarter and held Elon without a field goal for the final 5:27 of the period. Rendle's lay-up at the 7:28 mark of the second quarter gave the Tribe an 11-10 lead.
Elon gained control in the second thanks to an 11-0 run. Malaya Johnson and Meme Garner scored four points apiece during the run as Garner's free throws with 37 seconds left in the half gave the Phoenix its largest lead at 30-17. In total, Elon scored 22 second-quarter points, shooting 50 percent (8-of-16) from the floor during the stretch.
A
Nari Garner 3-pointer just over five minutes into the second half closed the gap to 34-26 and forced an Elon timeout. The Phoenix answered with back-to-back buckets from Meme Garner and Jaylin Powell to re-establish a double-digit lead and held an 11-point cushion, 42-31, at the end of three quarters.
Another
Nari Garner triple at the 7:31 mark of the fourth cut the deficit to single-digits once against at 46-37. Elon again answered with six-straight points and held off the Tribe behind 10-of-15 shootings (66.7 percent) in the final quarter.
Individual Highlights
Senior
Abby Rendle led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Nayla Pollard finished with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, while senior guard
Jenna Green tallied seven points and six assists. Sophomore
Victoria Reynolds also had 10 boards.
Malaya Johnson led Elon with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Meme Garner and Ra'Shika White each tallied 12 points for the Phoenix, while Shay Burnett turned in a 10-point, nine-rebound, six-assist stat line.
Inside the Numbers
- The Tribe finished the game shooting 26.5 percent (18-of-68) from the field, while the Phoenix connected at a 45-percent (27-of-60) clip.
- W&M turned Elon over 19 times and converted those into 15 points, outscoring the Phoenix, 15-8, in points off turnovers.
- Both teams connected on 11 free throws in the contest as the Tribe shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) at the charity stripe compared to Elon's 61.1 percent (11-of-18).
- Both teams struggled from 3-point range on the evening. W&M hit 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from long range, while Elon hit just 2-of-17 (11.8 percent).
- The Tribe pulled down 18 offensive rebounds and converted them into a 13-8 advantage in second chance points.
