Men's Tennis Drops Match at FAU, 5-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Close matches decided by three-set singles tilts have been the norm for the William & Mary men's tennis team and Tuesday followed the same script. Unfortunately, the Green and Gold dropped two of the three three-setters on Tuesday afternoon at FAU, falling to the host Owls, 5-2. Senior Lars de Boer and freshman Finbar Talcott posted singles wins for the Green and Gold (7-4).

de Boer won in straight sets at No. 5 singles, downing Thomas Bugeaud, 6-4, 6-3. Bugeud entered the match at 6-1 on the five line, while de Boer won his seventh match overall and third in dual-match play. The Owls (11-5) countered with a pair of straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to lead the Tribe, 3-1.

Talcott rallied for a three-set victory at the No. 4 spot to draw W&M within 3-2. After dropping the first set to Ignacio Garcia, 6-1, the Tribe rookie responded with a tiebreaker win the second, before turning it on with a dominating 6-0 triumph in the third. It was Talcott's fourth-straight win as he improved to 13-9 overall, a team-best 8-2 in dual-match play and 5-0 at No. 4.

FAU secured the team victory with three-set wins at No. 1 and No. 6. The Owls' Remi Chancerel held off a comeback attempt from senior Alec Miller at the top spot thanks to a tiebreaker win in the third.

The Owls opened the match by taking the doubles point with narrow wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Christian Cargill and freshman Louis Newman posted their second victory in a row at No. 2. The pair downed Ignacio Garcia and Jason Legall, 6-4, after the FAU pair entered the match at 4-0 at the second spot. Cargill and Newman improved to 10-5 overall and 5-3 on the two line.

The Tribe continues its three-match swing to the Sunshine State against Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, March. 8. The contest carries a 5 p.m., start time.
