WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 14, 2018)—The William & Mary lacrosse team posted a dominant second-half performance against VCU at Albert-Daly Field at Martin Family Stadium on Wednesday evening, as the Tribe earned a 15-5 victory against the Rams to remain unbeaten at home this season.
After trailing 3-1 midway through the opening half, W&M (3-4) charged back to knot the score at halftime and then blanked VCU, 10-0, during the second stanza en route to earning the lopsided non-conference triumph.
In addition to recording the second half shutout, W&M held the Rams (1-5) scoreless for the final 36:11 and posted a 13-1 run that spanned the final 41:54 of the contest.
W&M utilized a balanced attack offensively, as 10 different players scored at least one goal.
Tribe Standouts
Goalie
Claire Duchene came off the bench at halftime to finish the game with six saves and no goals allowed. Goalie
Elsa Rall also played well during the opening half and allowed just five goals with five saves.
Abby Corkum led W&M with three goals and an assist, while
Sophie Kopec also totaled four points (2g, 2a) with four ground balls and two draw controls.
McKinley Wade and
Eloise Gagnon also came up big offensively with two goals apiece.
In addition to finding the back of the cage once,
Hannah Ryan was outstanding defensively and recorded a career-high four caused turnovers with four ground balls and three draw controls.
Anne McElgunn and
Lindsay Koch also tallied three caused turnovers apiece.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot VCU, 39-18, and recorded a 21-6 margin in the second half. The Tribe also owned an advantage in ground balls (35-24) and committed eight fewer turnovers (26-18).
While the Green & Gold won six of 10 draws in the second half, VCU finished the game with a narrow margin on the draw circle (11-10).
The Opposition
Sofia Emond led the Rams with two goals, while Sky Hyatt added a goal and a game-high seven draw controls.
Goalie Ria Peralta posted a game-high 15 saves.

The Tribe registered season bests in shots (39), shots on goal (30), ground balls (35), caused turnovers (19) and fewest goals allowed (5) … W&M's 10 goal scorers represents a season-high … The contest marked the first meeting between W&M and VCU … The Tribe owns a 71-21-1 all-time record against teams currently in the Atlantic 10 … W&M improves to 3-0 at home this season and is outscoring its opponents by an average margin of more than six goals per game in those wins … The contest marked the fourth of eight contests against teams from the Commonwealth of Virginia on the Tribe's slate this season.
