CLEMSON, S.C. – The William & Mary baseball team extracted maximum effort from No. 12 Clemson as the Tigers had to overcome a three-run deficit in 10
innings to defeat the Tribe, 5-4, in the 2018 opener. W&M (0-1) surrendered a two-out three-run rally in the ninth for a tie game and a Clemson (1-0) walk-off RBI single ended the contest.
Junior
Bodie Sheehan hurled a tremendous game with just one run in seven innings and senior
Ryan Hall blasted a three-run homer in leading the Green and Gold to the three-run advantage.
The Tribe offense applied pressure in the third and fourth, but finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth. After junior
Owen Socher led off with a single and classmate
Zach Pearson drilled a one-out double, Hall went yard to give the Tribe the 3-0 advantage. The Tigers used a sacrifice fly to score its first run in the sixth, but W&M quickly pushed it back to a three-run game, 4-1, behind a Pearson RBI double in the seventh.
The drama intensified in the bottom of the ninth as the Tigers began the two-out rally with a two-RBI single from Robert Jolly. The ACC foe loaded the bases and evened the contest, 4-all, on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the 10
th, Bryce Teodosio hit a lead-off double and advanced to third behind a grounder. Teodosio was eventually brought home on a single through the left side by Chris Williams.
Tribe Standouts
The bottom of the lineup was most productive as Socher, Pearson and freshman
Matt McDermott had two hits apiece. Pearson doubled twice and McDermott added one as well. Hall drove in three of the Tribe's four runs behind his homer. Sheehan limited the Tigers to just three hits and struck out four in his seven innings of work.
Inside the Numbers
- Sheehan registered a quartet 123 innings, giving up his only extra base hit (double) in the first.
- Clemson starter Brian Hennessy struck out at least one batter in each frame to finish his appearance with a total of six.
- Socher led off with a single in both the fifth and seventh to help the Tribe score in each frame.
- A trio of Clemson relievers Ryne Huggins, Carson Spiers, and Ryley Gilliam allowed just one hit in the final two innings.
- Sophomore
Wade Strain was charged with the loss after tossing the last 0.2 inning.
- Gilliam earned the win as he struck out three in the final inning.
