COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Feb. 11, 2018)—The William & Mary lacrosse team outscored top-ranked Maryland by two goals in the second half and held the Terps scoreless during the final 17:42 but fell to the defending national champions, 18-7, in both teams' season opener at College Park, Md., on Sunday afternoon.
The Tribe outscored the Terps, 5-3, following intermission but was unable to overcome a 15-2 halftime deficit.
W&M utilized a balanced attack offensively, as six different players accounted for the team's seven goals. Conversely, a trio of Maryland standouts combined for 11 of the Terps scores.
Tribe Standouts
Maddie Torgerson led the Tribe offensively with two goals, while
Abby Corkum (2a) and
Nikky Price (1g, 1a) added two points apiece.
Annelise Kotz and
Cameron MacDonald also came up big with a goal and three draw controls apiece, while
Anne Milwicz provided a team-high four draw controls and a ground ball.
Danielle Palmucci and
Alexandria Specht also recorded goals for the Green & Gold.
Inside the Numbers
Maryland outshot the Tribe, 31-15, and held advantages in ground balls (10-5) and draw controls (14-8). Additionally, UM committed six fewer turnovers (8-14).
The Opposition
Megan Whittle led Maryland with five points (4g, 1a), while Caroline Steele (4g) and Jen Giles (3g, 1a) added four points apiece. Kali Hartshorn totaled a game-high six draw controls.
Notes
In addition to outscoring Maryland in the second half, W&M played the Terps even during the final 41:04 (7-7) … The victory extended Maryland's winning streak at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex to 66 games, as the Terps last lost at home on March 10, 2012 … Three Tribe players earned their first career starts – Milwicz,
Sophie Kopec and
Annalise Lower.
