The William & Mary field hockey team brought its season to a close on Friday, falling to No. 1-ranked and undefeated North Carolina, 4-0, in the NCAA First Round in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tribe moves to 12-8 to finish the year, while the Tar Heels improved to 20-0 and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
How it Happened
- Both teams started the game evenly matched, passing possession up and down the field to no ill effect for the first 15 minutes.
- North Carolina opened the scoring in the 18th minute, with Erin Matson flipping a shot up into the left upper 90.
- W&M got the ball down into the attacking circle a couple times looking for the response, including one chance where redshirt-senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) found freshman
Jorja Morgan (Wakerley, QLD, Australia) at the near post, but Morgan was unable to get a clear step before she was bumped off the ball and play went back upfield.
- The Tar Heels tacked on another just before the half, sweeping a shot up and just under the crossbar from Ashley Hoffman off a corner.
- The top-ranked team in the country got their third just a minute into the second half, with Catherine Hayden taking a slapshot from high in the circle that took an unlucky deflection and in.
- The final goal of the game came from Hoffman again on another corner in the 51st minute, this time powering her shot low in the left corner.
- W&M kept pressing looking to get on the board, with drives from
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.), Hughes, and
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.), but just could not find the final opening for a shot.
- The Tar Heels kept looking to add to their lead, but junior
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.), playing in relief of freshman
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.), made three saves including back-to-back clears off the line to try and keep her team in the mix.
- Senior goalkeeper
Jessica Wiggins (Williamsburg, Va.) checked into the game in the final five minutes, and immediately made two saves and blocked away two corners to preserve the margin.
