Volleyball Receives Strong Effort from Middle Blockers against Northeastern

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary volleyball middle blockers Julia Brown and Madeleine Bertz combined for 16 kills and seven blocks in a 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-20) setback against Northeastern on Sunday afternoon. Brown totaled nine kills and three blocks, while Bertz finished with seven kills and a match-high four blocks in leading the Tribe (5-16, 1-11 CAA) versus the Huskies (14-11, 7-5 CAA).

W&M came out firing in the first set after opening the frame with a 6-0 lead. Senior Katie Kemp set up Brown for a kill right down the middle to push the Tribe's advantage to 12-7. However, a pair of 4-0 runs allowed the Huskies to take the lead at 19-18. Both teams jockeyed for position in reaching extra points, before NU grabbed the period on a 3-0 spurt.

Only one lead change occurred the rest of the match as the Huskies built solid advantages in the last two sets. In the second game, Farrell hammered a shot the NU defense couldn't handle to make it a 12-all affair, but the Huskies clamped down to yield just six more point the rest of the frame.

Halfway through set three, the Tribe forced a couple of side outs behind the swing of Farrell to trail, 12-10. Nonetheless, the Huskies used the serve of Gabrielle Tschannen for a 4-0 spark in leading 16-12. The Tribe managed to narrow the gap to just three points, 23-20, following a crosscourt blast from Brown. But an NU kill and ace cut the comeback short.
