The William & Mary field hockey used a highly efficient attack on Saturday to overpower Pacific on the road, 5-0. With the win, its fourth-straight, the Tribe improved to 7-4 on the year, while the Tigers fell to 8-6 overall.
How it Happened
- W&M took control of the match early, scoring twice in the space of a minute to jump out in front and put pressure on Pacific.
- Seven minutes in exactly, the first goal went in. Freshman
Jorja Morgan (Wakerley, QLD, Australia) passed through the defense to find
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) in-stride and able to finish underneath goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder for the eventual game-winner, her third of the season.
- Just 45 seconds later, Hooper again found the boards, this time taking a pass from freshman
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.) at the near post and spinning her shot past van Tonder and into the far side of the goal.
- That's where the score stayed for the rest of the half, as both teams totaled four shots and Pacific held a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners.
- Play in the second half continued to flow evenly, with freshman goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) making a pair of saves to preserve the shutout before W&M was able to take advantage of a player-up situation to begin drawing penalty corners late.
- In the 54th minute, junior captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) took a pass out of a penalty corner from redshirt-senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia), and ripped a shot from high in the circle right past van Tonder to make the score 3-0.
- Three minutes later, van de Kamp scored again out of another corner, set up this time by classmate
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) and with the same result to chase van Tonder from the game.
- The exclamation point was provided in the waning moments of the 68th minute by sophomore
Melanie Strik (Den Haag, The Netherlands), who scored her first goal of the season to put W&M on top 5-0. Hughes drove the ball along the baseline and passed through three defenders to find Strik in front of goalkeeper Jessie Niccum. She only needed one step to open space, and fired back into the net past Niccum for the score.
