Women's Tennis Drops Home Match with No. 5 North Carolina

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's tennis team fell to No. 5-ranked North Carolina, 7-0, on Saturday morning at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The Tar Heels (1-0) took the doubles point with 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 3, before using straight-set singles wins in four of the six matches to pick up the team triumph in their season opener. The UNC lineup featured three nationally-ranked doubles teams and five nationally-ranked singles players, including four in the top 40.

Sophomore Rosie Cheng and junior Lauren Goodman turned in strong performance in three-set defeats at the No. 2 and No. 6 singles positions against nationally-ranked competition. Cheng rallied from a set deficit to force a third-set super tiebreaker against No. 11-ranked Makenna Jones. Despite dropping the first set, 6-3, Cheng picked up her play late in the set and carried the momentum over to the second, winning 6-2. Jones jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third-set super tiebreaker, but Cheng would not go quietly, ripping off four-straight points to pull even at eight. Jones claimed the final two points though to tally the victory, 11-9.

At No. 6, Goodman won the opening set, 6-4, over No. 124-ranked Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, who was 13-1 in the ACC last season. The North Carolina junior answered by breaking Goodman in the final game of the second set to pull even with a 6-4 triumph. Ouellet-Pizer outlasted the Tribe junior in the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-4.
