WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Youth was on display for the William & Mary men's tennis team on Sunday afternoon in its season opener. A trio of Green and Gold rookies posted singles wins, including the clincher from
Louis Newman at No. 3, to rally the Tribe past two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Monmouth, 4-3, at the McCormack-Nagselen Tennis Center.
Â
After senior
Lars de Boer evened the match at three apiece with a win at No. 2, the balance of the tilt came down to Newman and two-time All-MAAC junior Albert Giuffrida for the visiting Hawks. The Tribe rookie claimed the opening set, 7-5, but trailed by a break at 6-5 in the second. Newman broke back in the 12th game to send it to a tiebreaker. The Green and Gold freshman dominated the tiebreaker ripping off seven of the final eight points, including a match-clinching ace, to close out a 7-6 (2) victory.
Â
Monmouth opened the match by taking the doubles point, before freshman
Sebastian Quiros quickly evened the match with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Ole Gettler at No. 6. Fellow freshman
Finbar Talcott followed with a victory at No. 4 over Will Cooke Wharton, 6-4, 6-2, while Monmouth claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 5 to maintain a 3-2 cushion.
Â
de Boer set up the final dramatics for Newman with a straight-sets win at the No. 2 positions. The Tribe senior bounced Monmouth's Max Benaim, 6-3, 7-5, to tie the contest at three. It marked de Boer's 50th career singles win.
