The William & Mary field hockey team pulled off the biggest win of the year so far in the Colonial Athletic Association on Friday night, going on the road to upset No. 7 Michigan, 1-0. With the win, the Tribe improves to 4-1 on the year, while the Wolverines fall to 3-2 overall.
The W&M offense got things going early, and then turned it over to the Tribe defense to lock up the victory. Near the end of the eighth minute, senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) kicked off a textbook example of passing up the field. She swung it back to classmate
Booter Ellis (Delmar, Del.) to switch the field, and then Ellis found senior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) moving up the sideline. Lloyd then took a look and found sophomore
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) streaking down the middle of the field, hitting her in stride as she crossed into the scoring zone. Hooper only had to beat the charging goalkeeper and did, firing into the back of the boards for her third goal of the year.
Coming out of the restart, Michigan had and took its best shot of the day, but sophomore goalkeeper
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) wouldn't be beaten that easily and she turned it aside. She would not be tested again as she ran her shutout streak to 148:21. The Tribe had a couple more opportunities, pulling back-to-back corners in both halves, but was unable to capitalize keeping the score close and the tension high. Michigan had one more hard charge late, going empty net for the final 2:22, but the W&M defense stood tall and ran out the clock on the win.
W&M Starters: Connor (GK), Menges, Snead, Days, van de Kamp, Hughes, McCarthy, Ellis, Goodwin, Lloyd, MacLeod

Notes
The upset of the No. 7-ranked team was the best (by rank) of the year for the CAA ... It was W&M's first win over a top-10 ranked team since beating No. 5 Virginia 2-1 in 2013 ... It was also the Tribe's first Big Ten win since beating Indiana 1-0 in 2004 ...
Morgan Connor has now pitched back-to-back shutouts ... The last time W&M won two shutouts in a row was in 2014, against Davidson and Towson ... All of
Woodard Hooper's goals this year have been game-winners for the Tribe ... Her three game-winning goals lead the CAA so far this season ... Matches the team lead set by
Cammie Lloyd last year ... The last time a W&M player had four or more game-winners in a year was
Gina Cimarelli in 2006 (4), while the school record is seven (
Lydia Donley in 1991,
Cristina Limpens in 1993) ...
Cata Days (Buenos Aires, Argentina) made her first start of the season.
