The No. 19 William & Mary field hockey team recorded its second-straight shutout on Friday night, blanking Hofstra 5-0 in the conference opener for both teams. The Tribe improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win, while the Pride fell to 5-7 (0-1 CAA).
The Tribe was led to the win by a school-record performance from senior forward
Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.). She scored four of W&M's five goals, matching the all-time record for a single game that had previously been achieved eight times, most recently by
Christine Johnson '13 in 2012. MacLeod's hat trick plus one (or double-brace, if you will) was also the Tribe's first hat trick since classmate
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) scored one in 2015, and the most goals in a game in the CAA this season.
Although Hofstra started the game pressing hard, the Tribe defense stood tall and kept them without a shot before springing the offense for a counter-attack. Sophomore
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) got the ball at midfield, turned, and fed a through ball behind the defense to Lloyd at the top of the circle. With the keeper charging out, Lloyd found MacLeod on the back side of the play and set her up with a precise pass to allow MacLeod to score and put W&M up 1-0 less than three minutes in. In the 15th minute, it was Lloyd's turn to score her eighth of the year. Junior
Jenna Cutilli (Maple Glen, Pa.) stole the ball from a Hofstra defender just outside the dots, turned, and found Lloyd at the near post. From that range, the Tribe's leading scorer is near automatic, and was again tonight for a 2-0 lead and Cutilli's first career assist.
After the teams came out from the halftime break, the Green and Gold stepped up play in all three zones on the field. At the end of the 38th minute, again less than three minutes from the whistle, MacLeod struck again in the open field. On the attack, MacLeod tipped a long pass from Lloyd towards the Hofstra goalkeeper for an easy save, but the senior followed her shot and ont he reshot was able to slip the ball under the keeper and into the goal at the far post. The 49th minute saw a new goalie for the visitors and a penalty corner for the Tribe. With Hofstra clogging up the middle, striker
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) found MacLeod lurking on the edges and fed her the ball for a nearly uncontested goal and MacLeod's first career hat trick. She would add her record fourth at the start of the 54th minute, out of another corner. This time, freshman
Melanie Strik (Den Haag, The Netherlands) took the shot from up top that was saved, and once again MacLeod was in close to corral the rebound and take the quick re-shot and score, setting the final margin at 5-0.
