Sydney Biniak Delivers Banner Effort as Volleyball Sweeps Savannah State

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Behind a standout performance from senior Sydney Biniak, the William & Mary volleyball team swept Savannah State in the second match of the Colonial Classic on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena. Biniak posted the 13th-best attack percentage in school history (.591) and registered a match-high 14 kills as the Green and Gold (2-4) dispatched the visiting Tigers (2-5) in three sets, 25-11, 25-15 and 25-21.
 
The Tribe roared out of the gates, claiming the first seven points of the opening set, including four Biniak kills. W&M extended its lead to as much as 20-3 with an 8-0 spurt. In total, Biniak tallied six of the Tribe's first eight kills and seven for the first set. Freshman Lauren Moussaid ended the Tribe's 25-11 victory with an ace, W&M's third of the opening set.
 
Mousssaid highlighted the Tribe effort in the second set, picking up five kills. W&M scored six-straight points to push an 8-7 advantage to 14-7 on the way to a 25-15 triumph and a two-set advantage.
 
W&M pulled out the sweep with a late push in the third. The majority of the final set was back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than two. With the match tied at 19 apiece, W&M won three-straight points, before Biniak capped the Tribe triumph with a kill and a service ace.
 
Inside the Numbers
As a team, the Tribe tallied a .359 attack percentage, which was its best since posting a .376 effort against Gardner Webb in a 3-0 victory at the South Carolina tournament on Sept. 16, 2016….W&M totaled a season-high nine service aces against Savannah State. It was the most aces since posting 11 against Delaware on Nov. 12, 2016… Junior Katie Kemp led W&M with three, while freshman Julia Brown added two.

  • Biniak has tallied double-digit kills in three of her last four matches.
  • Moussaid posted season-highs in attack percentage (.385) and digs (13) to go along with seven kills.
  • Brown tallied a season-best 10 points, notching seven kills and two blocks.
  • Brown recorded two services aces for the second time this season, both Tribe victories.
  • Freshman Kate Dedrick posted six kills to finish with a season-best attack percentage of .417.
  • Freshman Taylor Heishman topped the Tribe with four blocks for the second-straight match.
  • Sophomore Autumn Brenner led all players with 22 assists and scooped five digs.
  • Kemp recorded three aces for the fourth time in her career and was one off her career high of four vs. Northeastern in 2015.
  • The Tribe committed a season-low 11 errors.
