Sydney Biniak tallied a match-high 12 kills and junior
Heather Pippus added 10 more to pace the Tribe (2-11) during the first-ever meeting with the Aggies (7-5).
The Green and Gold produced its best effort in the second set, forcing nine ties and five lead changes. Back-to-back slams from Pippus provided W&M a two-point margin, 8-6, to start the period. No more than two points separated each team until the Aggies went on a 4-0 run to open up a 21-17 advantage. Freshman
Julia Brown's
fifth hammer of the stanza made it a one-point difference, 22-21, but NMSU closed out the game with a 3-1 spurt.
The Aggies registered a .433 attack percentage with no errors to take the third set. The Tribe was down early in the frame, 15-7, and could never recover. After Biniak crushed her 11
th kill of the afternoon, NMSU ignited a 7-1 run to earn the win in three sets.
Inside the Numbers
- Pippus chipped in a season-best 13 digs for her first double-double of 2017. It's also the eighth double-double of her career.
- Biniak not only pushed her double figure kill streak to nine matches in a row, but also recorded a season-best seven digs. She totaled three blocks as well.
- Sophomore
Autumn Brenner led all players with 33 assists. Brenner has exceeded 30 assists on four occasions this year. She finished the Wildcat Classic averaging 9.70 assists per set.
- Brown registered a season-high nine kills in 18 attempts with just two errors (.389 attack percentage).
Notes
The contest marked the first-ever meeting against a Western Athletic Conference opponent…Biniak was named to her fourth consecutive All-Tournament Team after averaging 4.00 kills per set this weekend… Pippus scored a season-best 11 points in her first start this year…The Tribe had two players reach 10-plus kills for the second time this weekend...Brenner jumped to 11
th all-time with 1,133 career assists…Brown scored at least 10 points for the third time in 2017.
