The No. 18 William & Mary field hockey team fell on the road Friday night, losing to the nation's top offense in No. 5 Virginia, 7-2. The tribe suffered just its second loss of the season, both to top-five teams, and moved its record to 5-2, while the Cavaliers improved to 6-1 overall.
The scoring was fast and furious in the first half, with five goals in the first 16 minutes. The Cavaliers got things going first with a goal in the fifth minute, then barely a minute later sophomore
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) curved a pinpoint pass to senior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) who got behind the goalkeeper to score her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Virginia went back ahead at the start of the 11th minute, before senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) tied things up once again in the 14th minute. Playing high in the field, she used some fancy stick skills to steal the ball from a UVA defender and took a short drive into the circle before finishing into an upper 90 for her second goal of the season. The Cavaliers added three more goals before the half to take a 5-2 lead into the break, then added two more in the second half to set the final margin.
