TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior
Sydney Biniak and freshman
Kate Dedrick both recorded double-digit kills to lead the William & Mary volleyball team during a 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 19-25, 13-25) setback against Pac-12 foe Arizona in the Wildcat Classic on Friday afternoon. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 2-9 and the Wildcats improve to 5-2.
Biniak extended her double-digit kill streak to seven consecutive matches with 16 in the match. Dedrick reached 10-plus kills for the second straight contest as she clubbed 13 on a .355 attack percentage. The first-year player committed just two errors in her 31 attempts.
Arizona errors kept the first set close until the Wildcats took control of the frame on an 8-3 run. Dedrick hammered a kill and assisted Brown on a block, before an Arizona attack error cut the deficit to 18-14. Another Wildcats' error brought the Tribe within three, 24-21, but a Dedrick swing was denied by McKenzie Jacobson and Paige Whipple to end the stanza.
The second set started even, before the Green and Gold went ahead 9-6 courtesy of three unanswered points. Three Arizona errors and a rejection from Biniak and freshman
Taylor Heishman highlighted a 5-1 spark that granted W&M a 15-9 advantage. The Wildcats answered with four straight points out of a timeout to narrow the margin to 15-13. An Arizona ace then knotted the score at 24-all late in the frame. However, errors continued to plague the Wildcats as back-to-back attack misfires evened the match, 1-1.
Nonetheless, Arizona cut back on its mishaps and elevated its offensive attack in the third and fourth set to seal the match. The Wildcats' offense produced 19 kills apiece and totaled just four hitting errors in the last two frames to top W&M.
