HARRISONBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team improved to 2-0 for the second time in three seasons as they topped the ACC's Boston College 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in its final game of the Fairfield Inn by Marriot JMU Invite. Redshirt sophomore
Sarah Segan and seniors
Rachel Moore and
Sami Grasso scored in the victory.
After a back-and-forth start through the first 27 minutes, the Tribe broke through with a goal in the 28th minute. Segan made a great individual effort as she worked around the keeper and fired her shot home into the empty net from 12-yards out. Her first goal of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
At the break, W&M still held a 1-0 lead, even though the match remained pretty even. The Tribe had a 5-4 advantage in shots, but shots on-goal were tied 1-1. Sophomore
Katelyn Briguglio recorded one first half save.
BC (1-1) opened the second half with a quick flurry. Francesca Venzia had a shot just less than two minutes in, but a Tribe defender blocked it. W&M was also able to clear the ensuing corner kick to keep the game 1-0.
The Tribe doubled its lead in the 58th minute. After a give-and-go at midfield, Moore made a nice run into the box, before firing her shot past the goalkeeper from 12-yards out. Her first marker of the season made it 2-0 Tribe.
W&M put the game away in the 83rd minute when it found the back of the net for the third time on the day. Segan pushed the ball up the right side of the box, and played it back to Grasso. The senior one-timed the pass into the back of the net from five-yards out.
The Eagles did break W&M's season opening scoreless streak at 174 minutes with a goal just a minute after the Green and Gold's third. Olivia Vaughn played a deflection in the penalty area and placed her shot just passed the outstretched Briguglio. The marker made the final score 3-1.
