Baseball Holds Off Charleston, 6-4, to Clinch CAA Series

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Ryan Hall tallied three hits, two RBI and a home run to lead the William & Mary baseball team to a 6-4 series-clinching win over CAA rival College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon.

With its third straight victory, the Tribe advances to 27-21 overall and 11-6 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 22-24, 12-8 in CAA action.

Hall's homer was the third bomb of the series for the Green and Gold. Sophomore Hunter Smith finished 2-for-4 with a RBI, while seniors Ryder Miconi and Charles Ameer hit a double and drove in a run.

Sophomore Bodie Sheehan captured his fifth win as he went 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and four runs (four earned) on eight hits. Senior Nick Brown gained his second save in a row and fourth of the season, tossing one inning and allowing just one hit in four at bats.

It didn't take long for the Tribe to get on the scoreboard after platting a two-out run in the bottom of the first. Hall started the two-out spurt with a single to center field. Miconi was then hit by a pitch, before Smith drilled a RBI single to left field, giving W&M an early 1-0 lead.

W&M and Charleston traded blows with a combined six runs in the third inning. The Cougars claimed the advantage in the top of the inning. Joey Mundy and Xavier Freeman started the rally with back-to-back singles and moved up on a passed ball. The next batter, Luke Manzo hit a RBI single to center filed. Manzo then stole second and an error at shortstop allowed Freeman to come home. With two outs, Tommy Richter hit an RBI single up the middle to put Charleston up 3-1.

However, the Tribe ignited its own three-run rally in the home half of the third, reclaiming the advantage. Following the first out, junior Cullen Large forced a walk and Hall singled through the right side to set the table. Miconi then registered a two-RBI double to right center. Ameer capped the rally with a two-out RBI double to center field, giving W&M a 4-3 lead.

The Green and Gold used the long ball to extend its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Large lead of the frame with a single to left center. On the next at bat, Hall dialed up his sixth homer of the season behind a two-run bomb to right center, pushing W&M's margin to 6-3.

In the top of the seventh, the Cougars pushed across a run to narrow the Tribe's advantage. Ari Sechopoulos hit a leadoff double down the right field line, before a grounder moved him to third base. The next batter, Dupree Hart sent a sacrifice fly to right field to make it a 6-4 affair.

Nonetheless, junior reliever Charlie Fletcher retired the side in order in the top of the eighth, and Brown also held the Cougars at bay in the top of the ninth to secure the conference win and record two saves in as many days.

The Tribe will look to complete a sweep of Charleston during the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. Sunday is Military Appreciation Day for Tribe Baseball and active/retired military veterans can purchase tickets for $3.00.
