Baseball Drops Extra-Innings Heartbreaker in Elimination Game

WILMINGTON, N.C. –  In a fight for its playoff lives, the William & Mary baseball team dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to the College of Charleston in 11 innings in the CAA Baseball Championships on Friday at Brooks Field. The Tribe ends the season with a 32-25 mark.

Seven out of the nine W&M starters finished the game with multiple hits. Junior Ryan Hall paced the offense with three hits and two RBI. Freshman Brandon Raquet posted two hits, a double and drove in two runs, while junior Cullen Large notched two hits and platted a run as well. Sophomores Owen Socher, Hunter Smith and Kyle Wrighte and freshman Patrick Ryan had two hits apiece.

Charleston answered first on a deep shot in the top of the first. Luke Manzo dropped a one-out single down the right field line. After Tommy Ricther struck out swinging, Logan McRae barreled a two-run bomb to center field to give CofC an early 2-0 advantage.

The Cougars tacked on another run in the second inning as well. Ari Sechopoulos hit a leadoff single to center field, before Xavier Freeman doubled down the left line, setting the table. With one out, Bradley Dixon flied out to center field for a sac fly and a 3-0 Charleston lead.

However, the Green and Gold responded with a four-run rally in the bottom of the second, erasing its three-run deficit. A Ryan leadoff walk and back-to-back singles from Smith and Wrighte loaded the bases. After the first out, Raquet smacked a two-RBI single up the middle. Large and Hall followed up with consecutive two-out RBI singles as the Tribe went up 4-3.

Hall drove in his second run of the contest to increase the W&M lead in the bottom of the fourth. Raquet led off the frame with a double down the left line. Following the first out, Large singled to right field, which bumped Raquet 90 feet from home plate. Hall shipped his eighth sac fly of the season to left center, giving W&M a 5-3 advantage.

Both teams exchanged a run in the fifth inning. The Cougars managed to score courtesy of a two-out RBI single to the pitcher from Tommy Richter. However, freshman Matthew Trehub registered a RBI single down the left line push it back to a two-run game in favor of W&M at 6-4.

Nonetheless, the Cougars scored another pair of two-out runs to even it up in the top of seventh. Following a grounder and a strikeout, Richter singled up the middle. Logan McRae then sent a two-RBI home run to left field for the 6-all tie.

Both defenses bucked down in the eighth and ninth inning to keep the ball game knotted up. The Tribe turned a six-four-three double play to escape the top of the ninth unscratched. However, the Cougars returned the favor with a six-four-three double play of its own with the game-winning run on second base to force extra innings.

The 10th inning was uneventful as both teams went down in order. However, Charleston managed to take to lead in the top of the 11th. Joey Mundy led off the 11th with a double down the right line, before moving to third on a sac bunt. Mundy scored the game-winning run on a sac fly to left field. The Tribe loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but couldn't bring a runner home.

Nick Brown was credited with the loss as he tossed the final four innings with a strikeout and one run on one hit. Carter Love earned the win after hurling 7.2 strong innings of relief, fanning eight with one run on seven hits.
