Baseball Survives Hofstra Comeback Attempt to Take Series

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Senior Ryder Miconi and freshman Matthew Trehub registered a home run each to lead the William & Mary baseball team to a series-clinching 7-5 victory against CAA rival Hofstra in game two of Friday's doubleheader at University Park.

With the win, the Tribe advances to 30-23 overall and 14-8 in league action, while the Pride slides to 14-36, 7-16 in conference play. It is the fourth time W&M has notched at least 30 regular season wins in the past six years.

The pair of home runs from Miconi and Trehub totaled four for the Tribe in the doubleheader. Junior Cullen Large and sophomore Nick Butts both recorded a couple of doubles and drove in a run. Freshman Patrick Ryan finished 2-for-5 at the plate, while classmate Brandon Raquet and senior Charles Ameer platted one run apiece.

A solo bomb in back-to-back innings gave the Tribe an early edge. Miconi registered the first home run with a leadoff solo shot to left field in the second inning. In the top of the third, Trehub smashed the second straight leadoff blast to right center to give W&M a 2-0 lead. Miconi paces the team with nine homers on the year, while Trehub now has two.

Butts got busy in the fourth inning to help the Tribe stretch its advantage. Ryan started the frame with a single to right field, moved to second on a wild pitch and was bumped to third behind a balk. Butts then hammered a double to center field to plate Ryan. Butts advanced 90 feet away from home plate thanks to a grounder, before scoring on a wild pitch to lift the Green and Gold to a 4-0 margin

The Tribe tacked on its next pair of runs behind a sacrifice fly in both the fifth and sixth inning. Large led off the fifth with a double to left field and reached third on another balk. After the first out, Ameer brought Large home on a sac fly to left field.

In the top of the sixth, Butts went to work again with a leadoff double down the left line. Trehub then reached safely on a hit by pitch, before Raquet sent another sac fly to left field to put W&M up 6-0.

The Tribe defense was outstanding in the earley going as the team retired the side in order through the first three innings. Hofstra recorded its first hit in the fourth inning, but Tom Archer lined into a seven-six-three double play that closed the frame. Sophomore starter Bodie Sheehan recorded another one-two-three inning in the fifth before his day was done.

The Pride managed to break up the shutout with a run scored in the home half of the sixth and seventh inning. After loading the bases in the sixth, Teddy Cillis grounded to second base for the team's first run. Vito Friscia led off the seventh with a walk, moved to second after a single and advanced 90 feet from home plate on a wild pitch. Rob Weissheier then platted Friscia behind a ground out to shortstop, creating a 6-2 affair.

Both teams exchanged a run in the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, Large smashed a two-out RBI double down the left field line. The Pride responded in the bottom of the frame with a Cillis RBI single up the middle, making it a 7-3 contest in favor of W&M.

The Pride made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth after pushing across a pair of runs for a late comeback attempt. With one out, Vinnie Costello belted a two-run homer to left field to cut W&M's lead to 7-5. Regardless, senior John Yoest struck out the next batter and sealed the win on a fly out to center field.

Sheehan was tabbed with his sixth win of the year, which is a team-best. He limited the Hofstra offense to just one run on two hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Matt Weissheier was credited with his first loss after surrendering four runs (all earned) on five hits through 3.1 innings.

The Tribe will look to complete a three-game sweep of Hofstra tomorrow at 12 p.m.
