Tribe Men's Tennis Earns CAA Championship Berth, Upsetting Elon, 4-1

ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary men's tennis team knocked off No. 2 seed Elon, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to secure a place in the CAA Championship match for the second time in the last three years and 11th time overall. After the No. 3 seed Tribe (11-11) claimed the doubles point, senior Aidan Talcott and juniors Alec Miller and Lars de Boer posted singles wins to lock up the victory over Elon (12-12). SCHEDULE NOTE: CAA Championship match between W&M and UNCW will be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C., due to the forecast of inclement weather.
 
W&M took the doubles point for the second-straight match at the CAA Championship to open up a 1-0 lead. The Green and Gold's top pair of senior Ryan Newman and junior Christian Cargill upended Mario Paccini and Petar Tomic, 6-2, to give the Tribe the early lead. The tandem moved to 2-0 on the year at No. 1. After an Elon victory at the second spot, senior Addison Appleby and de Boer clinched the initial point of the match with a 7-5 victory over Felipe Sarrasague and Taylor Foote at No. 3. The duo tallied its fifth win this season and 14th as a team in their careers.
 
Talcott quickly pushed the Tribe cushion to 2-0 with his second win of the CAA Championship in as many days at the top position. He picked up his sixth win in the last seven matches, disposing of Felipe Sarrasague, 6-2, 6-0. Talcott, who is 3-0 in singles play during his career at the CAA Championship, extended his season mark to 16-10, including a 12-7 ledger at No. 1.
 
Elon pulled within 2-1 thanks to a win at No. 3, but Miller answered with a win at No. 4 to bring the Tribe to the brink of the team triumph. He downed Petar Tomic, 6-3, 6-2, for his 12th win of the year and 10th in dual-match play. Over his three season, Miller is 5-1 in singles play at the CAA Championship.
 
de Boer secured W&M's advancement to the title match with a straight-sets win at the sixth singles spot. He upended Jacob Bicknell, 6-4, 6-2, for his 11th win of the year. de Boer won for the fifth time in his last six matches and pushed his record to 6-2 at No. 6.
 
The Tribe faces top seed UNCW (13-8) in the CAA Championship match at 2 p.m., on Sunday. The title match will be played at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C., due to expected inclement weather. The Seahawks secured a spot in the championship thanks to a 4-2 win over Charleston on Saturday. The winner of the CAA Championship earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
