Baseball Drops 6-0 Decision Against Maryland

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –  The William & Mary baseball team dropped a 6-0 decision to Big Ten foe Maryland on Wednesday night at Plumeri Park. With the loss, the Tribe falls to 19-20, while the Terrapins improve to 25-11.

Maryland jumped on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning. Kevin Smith led off the inning, getting hit by a pitch. After two outs, A.J. Lee singled to left, before Zach Jancarski poked a single up the middle, giving the Terps a 1-0 lead.

The Terrapins used a two-out rally to extend their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Lee started the rally with a double down the left field line. Again, Jancarski came through with a base hit to left field, making it 2-0.

William & Mary threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning, but couldn't plate a run in its best chance to score in the game. Freshman Brandon Raquet led off the inning with the Tribe's first hit, before junior Cullen Large reached on an infield single. After an out, W&M loaded the bases on a Terrapins error. However, Jamal Wade was able to retire the final two outs to preserve the visitor's lead.

Maryland tacked on its third run with another two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Madison Nickens singled through the right side, before stealing second and reaching third on an error. Back-to-back walks to Nick Cieri and Lee loaded the bases, before Jancarski came up with his third RBI of the night on a single.

The Terps scored again in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, back-to-back singles from Lee and Jancarski put runners on first and second. The next batter, Brandon Gum singled to third, but Lee didn't stop and scored, extending the lead to 4-0.

Maryland added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Will Watson started the rally by getting hit by a pitch, before Kevin Smith reached on error putting runners on first and second. Nickens followed with a bunt single, but a throwing error allowed the first run to score. With two outs, Jancarski hit a sacrifice to center pushing the Terps to a 6-0 lead.

Freshman Jamie Sara was charged with the loss for W&M. He went three innings, but only allowed one run on five hits, while he struck out one.

Five pitchers, Ryan Hill, Wade, Jared Price, Andrew Miller, and Ryan Selmer, combined to blank the Tribe for Maryland. Wade went two innings allowing just three hits, while striking out three to earn his first win of the season. Offensively, Jancarski led the charge going 4-for-5 with four RBI.

W&M returns to Colonial Athletic Association action as they welcome in-state foe James Madison to Plumeri Park. The series lid-lifter is set for Friday, April 21 at 6 p.m.
