Men's Tennis Narrowly Falls to #49 Old Dominion on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In a sight all to familiar in the Hampton Roads rivalry, the William & Mary men's tennis team and Old Dominion battled to the narrowest of margins, unfortunately, the No. 49-ranked Monarchs pulled out a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility. Between singles and doubles, the Tribe (9-11) honored its four-member senior class of Addison Appleby, Ryan Newman, Damon Niquet and Aidan Talcott for their contributions to the program. It marked the seventh time in the last 10 years that the rivalry was decided by a 4-3 scoreline.

The Tribe received singles wins from Niquet as well as juniors Christian Cargill and Lars de Boer, both in three sets. ODU (17-5) recorded the team triumph by claiming a narrow doubles point to go along with straight-set singles wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4.

Niquet posted his 71st career singles win on Senior Day, topping Justin Herrera in straight sets at No. 5. The Tribe senior battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the opening set, wining the final five games to pick up a 7-5 triumph. Niquet, who pushed his ledger to 16-10 overall and 13-4 in duals, won the final six games of the second set to roll by his Monarch counterpart, 6-1.

For the second-straight match, Cargill rallied for a come-from-behind three-set victory to extend his winning streak to six. After dropping the opening set to Michael Weindl, 6-3, the Tribe junior broke his ODU foe in the final game of the second set to pull out a 6-4 win. Weindl jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the decisive third set, but Cargill answered by winning six of the final seven games for his 14th triumph of the year. He improved to 12-5 at the No. 2 post as well.

Like Cargill, de Boer need three sets, but outlasted Aziz Kijametovic for his fourth victory in the last five matches. He claimed the opening set, 6-2, before Kijametovic bounced back to take the second, 6-3. de Boer would not be outdone in the third, rallying back to for a 6-3 triumph. Trailing 3-2, he won the final four games to pick up his 10th win of the year and improve to 5-2 at No. 6.

The Tribe mixed up its doubles lineup and the initial point of the match came down to a trio of 6-4 tilts. After ODU picked up the first victory, Newman and Cargill answered with a 6-4 triumph over Kijametovic and Jose Nunez Navarro at the top post. It marked the first time the duo teamed together. The important doubles point came down to the No. 2 spot where Adam Moundir and Javier Jover Maestre outlasted sophomore Tristan Bautil and Talcott, 6-4, to clinch the point.

The Tribe returns to action when it takes part in the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, April 21-23. The event will be held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C., for the second-straight year. W&M has won four CAA Championships, including the last in 2015. The seeding for the CAA Championship will be released from the conference office early next week. The Tribe opens play in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 21. The quarterfinals are slated for both 9 a.m., and 1 p.m., depending on seed. The CAA Semifinals are set for Saturday, April 22, at 10 a.m., with the championship match on Sunday, April 23, at 10 a.m.
