WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 15, 2017)— The William & Mary football team concluded its spring practice season with the annual Green & Gold Game at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Players on both sides of the ball provided highlights, as the offense moved the ball well at times and scored three touchdowns and a field goal, while the defense posted six sacks and created a turnover.
Video highlights are available here.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Ted Hefter led the offense to touchdowns on two of his three series and finished the afternoon as the team's top passer, completing 10-of-13 passes for 132 yards with a pair of touchdown strikes to redshirt freshman tight end Josh Stallings (25 yds, 19 yds).
Sophomore quarterback Brandon Battle accounted for the Tribe's other touchdown with a 26-yard pass to redshirt freshman wideout Anthony Mague.
In addition to hauling in a pair of touchdown passes from Hefter, Stallings totaled a team-high four catches for 79 yards.
Redshirt freshman Noah Giles finished as W&M's top rusher with five carries for 31 yards, while redshirt freshman Jaret Anderson (5-31) and sophomore Brehon Britt (4-22) also provided production on the ground.
Junior linebacker Shamir Bearfield led the Tribe defensively with a pair of sacks, a forced fumble and a PBU.
At the completion of the game, the team announced captains for the 2017 season (as derived from a team vote) with a quartet of players garnering the honor – senior defensive end Matt Ahola, senior tight end Andrew Caskin, senior offensive lineman Connor Hilland and senior cornerback Aaron Swinton.
Another major team award was announced on Saturday, as Ahola was selected as the recipient of the John A. Stewart Winter Warrior Award, which is given annually to the player, or players, who best exemplify the qualities of dedication, effort and achievement that defined Stewart's career at W&M. Awardees are judged on their improvements both on the field and in the off-season training program.
The Tribe will open the 2017 season when it plays at Virginia on Sept. 2.
