Men's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to VCU

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary men's tennis team suffered its second-straight 4-3 setback, falling to VCU on Wednesday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility. Senior Aidan Talcott and juniors Christian Cargill and Alec Miller posted singles wins for the Green and Gold (9-10), but it was not enough to overcome the Rams (11-11).

After VCU took the doubles point with victories at the top two posts, Talcott won his fourth match in a row to pull the Tribe even at one. The W&M senior outlasted the Rams' Daryl Monfils in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), before blitzing the First Team All-Atlantic 10 player, 6-0, in the second. Talcott pushed his mark to 10-6 at the top singles post, while improving to 14-9 overall.

Cargill notched his fifth-straight victory at the No. 2 position in come-from-behind fashion. After dropping the opening set to Marten Jonsson, 6-2, he bounced back with a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker win in the second. Cargill won four of the final five points in the third-set super tiebreaker to down Jonsson, 10-7. The Tribe junior posted his 13th win of the season, while extending his record to 11-5 at No. 2.

At the No. 4 singles post, Miller needed a pair a tiebreaker set victories, but ousted Vitor Lima, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5). He won for the third time in his last four matches, while improving to 11-10 overall with his ninth dual-match triumph.

Along with taking the doubles point, VCU received singles wins from Arvid Noren (No. 3), Javier Amantegui (No. 5) and Ignacio Rivero Crespo (No. 6) to pull out the team victory.

The Tribe closes out the regular season with its final home match on Easter Sunday, April 16. The Green and Gold welcomes No. 49 Old Dominion to the Millie West Tennis Facility for a 1 p.m. match. W&M will honor its senior class of Addison Appleby, Ryan Newman, Damon Niquet and Aidan Talcott during the match.
