Women's Basketball Set for CAA Semifinal Against Top-Seeded Elon Friday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary women's basketball team picked up its first CAA Tournament victory since 2009 and move onto the CAA Semifinals where they will square off with regular season champion and top-seeded Elon on Friday, March 10. Tip time from the JMU Convocation Center is set for 4:30 p.m.

Opening Tip
For the first time since 2001 the William & Mary women's basketball team is in the Colonial Athletic Association Semifinals. W&M will square off with top-seeded in regular season champion Elon on Friday, March 10. The Tribe advanced to today's game with a 59-44 quarterfinal triumph over Delaware. It will be the 11th time in series history that the Green and Gold and Elon meet.  
 
Last Time Out
The William & Mary women's basketball team advanced to the CAA Semifinals thanks to a dominant fourth quarter in a 59-44 victory over Delaware on Thursday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center. The guard combo of Marlena Tremba and Jenna Green combined for all 19 of the Tribe's fourth-quarter points as the Green and Gold held UD to just 2-of-11 in the final frame and only 28.6 percent over the last 20 minutes. Tremba scored a game-high 23 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. She was 5-of-10 from 3-point range and connected on all six of her free throw attempts. Green tallied 12 points on 4-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3point range, to go along with three assists. Senior Latrice Hunter rounded out the double-digit scoring guards for the Tribe with 11 points, including nine in the first half.
 
Scouting the Phoenix
Elon picked up a 78-50 victory over No. 9 seeded Hofstra in the quarterfinal to advance to today's contest. The Phoenix, which won the CAA regular season crowd, has won six in a row and is 25-6 this season. For the year, Elon is scoring 70 points on the dot, while allowing its opponents to just 58.5 points per game. They boast a balanced attack with three players average double-figures led by Shay Burnett, who has scored 11.8 points per game. Lauren Brown (11.4) and Jenifer Rhodes (11.1) are just off the pace. The Phoenix also does a good job controlling the glass, averaging 42.1 rebounds per game. Burnett also leads the charge on the glass with 7.4 rebounds a night. Malaya Johnson is second on the team with 6.5 rebounds per game. Charlotte Smith won CAA Coach of the Year honors for her effort this season. The former UNC star owns a 112-76 record at Elon.
 
Series History
It will be the 11th time in series history that the Green and Gold and Elon meet.  The Phoenix swept the regular season series picking up a 60-58 victory at Kaplan Arena, before holding serve at home 70-47. Overall, EU leads the series 7-3, including winning all six games since joining the CAA. Sophomore Bianca Boggs led the Tribe in the two games by averaging 11.5 points and four rebounds. Junior Abby Rendle was second on the team by averaging 7.5 points in the two setbacks.
 
The Road Ahead
The winner of today's game advances to the CAA Championship, which is set from the James Madison Convocation Center on Saturday, March 10 at 7 p.m. The second semifinal, which takes place following this game, pits the No. 2-seeded James Madison Dukes and the No. 3-seeded Drexel Dragons.
