CARY, N.C. – The William & Mary baseball team won its second straight after blanking Dayton, 7-0, in day two of the Irish Classic on Saturday afternoon. The triumph moves the Tribe to 5-4, while the Flyers fall to 3-5.
Â
Sophomore
Bodie Sheehan (2-1) earned the win for W&M as he posted an outstanding 11 strikeouts and just three hits through 7.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Redshirt freshman
Chris Farrell tossed 1.1 innings of solid relief to complete the shutout, allowing just one hit against six batters.
Â
Senior
Charles Ameer highlighted the lineup with a flawless 3-for-3 effort at the plate, adding a double, a home run and a RBI. Junior
Cullen Large also hit a homer and drove in two runs.
Â
The Tribe offense came alive early as the Green and Gold plated three runs on three hits in the first inning. Rookie
Brandon Raquet sparked the rally with a leadoff single. After an out, Large smashed a two-run homer to right field. Ameer hit a two-out single up the middle before a hit by pitch moved him to second base. Back-to-back walks tacked on another run for the 3-0 advantage.
Â
The Flyers came close to breaking their scoring drought in the fourth inning. Connor Echols led off with a single bunt, before Robbie Doring reached on a fielder's choice. Doring then willed himself to third by stealing consecutive bases. However, Sheehan fanned the next couple of batters to leave Doring stranded on third.
Â
W&M extended its lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore
Matthew Keane drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second after freshman
Michael Goldak earned a one-out walk. Following the second out, redshirt sophomore
Kyle Wrighte belted a single to plate Keane, giving the Tribe a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Green and Gold followed up with two more runs in the fifth inning. Keane plated a run behind a two-out single and was brought home on a RBI single to center field by Goldak.
Â
In the seventh, Ameer recorded the Tribe's second homer of the game with a leadoff solo shot to left field. The home run marks Ameer's third of the season and his second in back-to-back games.
Â
Jordan Cox (0-1) was credited the loss for the Flyers. He allowed three runs on three hits, all of which were earned, after tossing one inning.
Â
The Tribe concludes the Irish Classic tomorrow (March 5) with a matchup against Rhode Island. First pitch is set for 11:45 a.m.
