Men's Tennis Falls at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – The William & Mary men's tennis team fell at Ivy League foe Princeton, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon. Senior Damon Niquet posted the Tribe's lone point with a victory at the No. 3 singles position. W&M dropped to 6-7 overall, while the Tigers won their sixth straight to improve to 10-6.

Niquet moved up a few spots from his usual No. 5 post in the singles line-up and won in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6, 7-6, over Kial Kaiser, who entered at 9-2 in dual-match play. The Tribe senior won his seventh-straight tilt and improved his team-leading overall mark to 13-8. He is also a Tribe-best 10-2 in dual-match competition.

In doubles, the Tribe took the early lead thanks to a win from Niquet and junior Christian Cargill at No. 2. The Green and Gold pairing upended Thomas Colautti and Payton Holden, 6-1, to improve to 9-6 on the year. Princeton rallied with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the doubles point. At the top spot, the Tribe tandem of junior Ryan Newman and sophomore Tristan Bautil just missed upsetting the No. 24 nationally-ranked team of Luke Gamble and Alex Day. The Tiger pairing outlasted Newman and Bautil, who teamed together for the first time in 2017, 6-4 to help Princeton to the initial point of the match.

The Tigers followed with straight-set singles wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to cement the team triumph. At the top singles position, Cargill jumped out to a set lead over Colautti, winning the first, 6-4. The Tiger player rallied to take the second, 7-5, and then outlasted the Tribe junior in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-7.

W&M wraps up its road trip against its second-straight Ivy League foe in Penn on Sunday. The match-up with the Quakers carries an 11 a.m. start time from the Hecht Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
