WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After a tough loss to Saint Joseph's last night, the William & Mary baseball team bounced back with a dominant 10-3 triumph over Yale on Saturday afternoon. The Tribe moves to 8-6 with the win, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-4.
Â
Freshman
Brandon Raquet reached in all five of his plate appearances, picking up his first career four-hit game. He scored twice, drove in a run and picked up a triple on the afternoon. Junior
Cullen Large was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while senior
Ryder Miconi also drove in a pair of runs on two hits. Sophomore
Zach Pearson was 2-for-4 with two runs to go along with an RBI double, and junior
Ryan Hall scored three runs in reaching base four times in his five at-bats, including three walks.
Â
Sophomore
Bodie Sheehan was sharp from the start, striking out all three batters he faced in the opening inning. The reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week threw seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on five hits, while striking out nine to pick up his third victory of the season. Senior Daniel Power pitched the final two innings in relief, striking out three. Â
Â
The Green and Gold scored a trio of runs in the first inning and never trailed. Raquet started things off with a triple to right-center field gap. He came around to score on Large's single to right. After a Miconi single up the middle off the pitcher, both players moved up on back-to-back wild pitches. Large scored on the second errant pitch, before Miconi trotted home on
Charles Ameer's ground out to short.
Â
W&M loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the third, but could only cash in one run. Hall led off the frame with a base on balls, before Raquet and Large followed with singles. Yale turned a 4-6-3 double play on a Miconi ground ball, but Hall scored on the play to increase the lead to 4-0.
Â
Yale used the long ball to get on the scoreboard in the fourth. Richard Slenker hit his first home run of the year to left field to lead off the frame. One batter later, Griffin Dey hit a homer off the scoreboard to cut the Tribe cushion to 4-2.
Â
The Tribe answered three, two-out runs in the bottom of the inning. Pearson lined a shot deep to left field, just off the glove of Yale's Tom Ruddy, for a double to plate sophomore
Matthew Keane, who walked earlier in the inning. After a Hall walk, Raquet picked up a third hit on the day with a single to center, plating Pearson. Large singled sharply through the right side to bring home Hall and give the home team a 7-2 lead through four innings.
Â
W&M once again loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but could only muster a single run. Pearson, Hall and Raquet each singled to fill the bases. After a strike out, Miconi drove in his first run of the game on a fielder's choice to second base, increasing the Green and Gold advantage to 8-2.Â
Â
Miconi picked up his second RBI in three innings in the bottom of the eighth. Hall and Raquet reached on back-to-back walks, and Miconi brought Hall around to score with a single up the middle. Ameer walked to load the bases, before a wild pitch plated Raquet for the Green and Gold's 10th run of the contest. Yale scored a single run in the top of the ninth on an Alex Boos single up the middle for the final 10-3 margin.
