Men's Basketball Falls at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The William & Mary men's basketball team suffered a 79-61 setback at Drexel on Thursday night. The Dragons (8-18, 3-10 CAA) scored the game's first 11 points and in the second half, used a 15-4 run to put the game away after the Tribe (13-11, 7-6 CAA) drew within eight points.

Senior Omar Prewitt led four Tribe players in double figures with 17 points on 7-of-13 from the floor to go along with seven rebounds. Junior Jack Whitman finished with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and pulled down six rebounds despite battling the flu most of the week. Senior Daniel Dixon and freshman Nathan Knight added 10 points apiece.
 
Drexel jumped out of the gates, hitting six of its first 10 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Kari Jonsson led the way with eight of DU's first 11 points, including back-to-back triples, in staking the Dragons to a double-digit advantage. DU held W&M without a field goal for the opening 6:45 and in the process opened up a 22-4 lead. A 14-4 Dragon run extended the lead to its largest of the first half at 30-8 on an Austin Williams jump hook with 10:21 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
 
Dixon and Prewitt combined to score seven-straight Green and Gold points as part of a 14-3 run to cut the gap to 11. Prewitt scored 10 of the Tribe's 14 points during the run. His back-to-back driving layups narrow the margin to 33-22 with 4:29 remaining in the first half. W&M closed to as little as 10 on two occasions over the final minute. Cohn's driving layup with just five seconds remaining closed the half-time gap to 45-35.
 
A Prewitt floater on the Tribe's first possession of the second-half brought W&M within eight points, 45-37, less than a minute into the second half. Drexel answered with six-straight, including four from Austin Williams, to re-establish a 14-point margin.
 
The deficit was just 11, 51-40, following a Cohn corner 3-pointer at the 16:28 mark. The Dragons held W&M without a field goal for the nearly six minutes and used a 9-1 run to put the game away. Kurk Lee sparked the run with seven of the Dragon's nine points and assisted on the other field goal. He found Sammy Mojica for a layup at the 11:27 mark to increase the Drexel lead to 60-41. W&M could get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
 
W&M finished the night shooting 44 percent (22-of-50) from the field, but were just 4-of-20 (20 percent) from 3-point range and 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) at the free throw line. Drexel shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) on the evening and hit nine 3-pointers. DU held a 39-32 advantage on the glass.
 
Jonsson led all scorers with 23 points on 6-of-12 from 3-point range to go with four steals. Lee added 13 points and five assists, while Mojica had 12 points and six assists. Rodney Williams and Austin Williams each tallied 10 points. Austin Williams led Drexel with eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Tribe returns home to host its annual #WMGoldRush Game against Charleston on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m., and the game will be televised on Comcast Sportsnet with Al Koken and John Feinstein on the call.
