CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In a Charlottesville Regional rematch from last year where William & Mary eliminated Virginia, the Tribe led the No. 12 Cavaliers through six innings, but couldn't overcome a late rally by the home-standing Wahoos in a 11-3 loss on Tuesday afternoon. W&M now holds a 3-4 record and UVA moves to 8-0.
Senior
Ryder Miconi and reigning CAA Rookie of the Week freshman
Patrick Ryan led the Tribe offense with two hits each. Freshman
Brandon Raquet added two RBI and the second home run of his career, both of which came against top 15 ranked programs.
Both offenses got off to a slow start in the first two innings, but W&M grabbed an early 2-0 advantage in the third inning. Ryan led off the frame with a single to shortstop. Following an out, Raquet ended the scoring drought with a two-run homer to right field.
The Virginia offense added a run of its own in the fourth inning. Adam Haseley smacked a lead off double and a grounder advanced him to second. The next batter, Robbie Coman brought Haseley home on a sacrifice fly.
The Cavs threatened to score in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Tribe left a runner stranded on third in each frame to protect its lead. Nonetheless, UVA finally broke through in a major way with a seven-run rally in the seventh.
After one out, Andy Weber came in to pinch hit and got on base with a hit by pitch. The next batter, Nate Elkhoff followed with a single through the left side that advanced Weber all the way to third. A fielding error on the next at bat plated Weber and Ernie Clement knocked an RBI single to give the Cavs the advantage, 3-2.
Virginia continued the rally as Jake McCarthy connected on a two RBI triple and also made it home due to a throwing error. Back-to-back homers then pushed the margin to 8-2.
The Green and Gold plated a run in the eighth inning in an attempt to cut the deficit. Freshman
Matthew Trehub led off with a walk and moved to scoring position on a two-out grounder. Junior
Cullen Large brought Trehub home after blasting a double to left field.
However, the Cavaliers cushioned their lead with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. With the bases loaded, Pavin Smith hit a two-RBI single. Coman drew a walk to juice the bases again, before Cameron Simmons then pushed across one more run before the Tribe could get the final out.
Freshman
Michael Goldak (0-1) was credited the loss for the Green and Gold. Starter
Nick Raquet was solid through five innings of work, allowing one earned run on three hits and recording a strikeout.
Alec Bettinger earned the win for UVA as he logged 2.2 innings of relief and gave up only one earned run on one hit.
The Tribe continue their mid-week stretch with a quick turnaround at VMI tomorrow (March 1). First pitch is set for 3 PM.
