All-Around Performance Leads Men's Basketball to Road Win at Delaware, 85-64

NEWARK, Del. – The William & Mary men's basketball team turned in a strong all-around performance in rolling to an 85-64 road win at Delaware on Saturday night. Offensively, the Tribe (15-12, 9-7 CAA) scored at every level, shooting 52 percent from the field, hitting 10 three-pointers and getting to the free throw line to the tune of 21-of-29 at the charity stripe. W&M used a 26-5 run spanning the end first half and start of the second to open up a commanding lead on the way to the win over the Blue Hens (12-17, 5-11 CAA).

Seniors Daniel Dixon (25) and Omar Prewitt (23) combined for 48 of the Tribe's 85 points in the victory. Dixon was 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and 7-of-9 at the free throw line. He also topped the Tribe with eight rebounds. Prewitt shot 8-of-12 from the floor, 2-of-3 from three and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. He turned in a strong stat line with seven rebounds and team-bests of six assists and three steals.

The Tribe hit four of its first five from three-point range, including back-to-back triples from junior David Cohn and Dixon to open up a 12-7 lead just four and a half minutes into the contest. The Blue Hens pulled even at 17 on a Devonne Pinkard three-pointer at the 11:28 mark. The Hens scored four straight, including a baseline-driving dunk from Jacob Cushing, to take its largest lead, 23-20, with 6:24 remaining in the first half.

W&M closed the half on an 18-3 run to open up a double-digit advantage at the intermission. The Tribe scored 10 straight points to surge in front. Dixon connected on back-to-back triples, before a Jack Whitman putback extended the Tribe lead to 30-23 at the 3:26 mark.

The Green and Gold scored the half's final six points to open up a 12-point cushion. Prewitt canned a left wing three-pointer, before finding Dixon for a cutting lay-up and an old-fashion trio. Dixon's three-point play, three of his 16 first-half points, send W&M to the locker room with a 38-26 lead. Over the final six minutes of the first half, the Tribe limited UD to 1-of-8 from the floor with two turnovers.

W&M continued its run into the second half, scoring six of the period's first eight points. Dixon tallied four during the opening minute and a half, including a transition dunk off a dish from Prewitt. The flush pushed the Tribe lead to 44-28 and forced the Delaware timeout at the 18:32 mark.

Delaware twice drew within 11 in the second half, but each time the Tribe responded with a run led by Prewitt. UD closed to 47-36 on a Ryan Daly three-pointer, four minutes into the second half. Prewitt answered with six-straight points, including an old-fashion three-point play, to push the margin to 17, 53-36, just a minute and a half later.

Four-straight UD points from Mosley cut the gap to 61-50 with 11 minutes remaining, but again, the Tribe scored six in a row. Prewitt tallied the final four, finishing off a dish from freshman Nathan Knight to extend the lead back to 17.

The Green and Gold advantage ballooned over 20 points thanks to a 12-2 run. Knight scored five straight to start the run, including an old-fashion three-point play off a nice pass from junior Oliver Tot. A Cohn steal and fast-break lay-up pushed the lead to 20, 79-59, before Prewitt capped the spurt with a right wing three-point. Freshman Omar Mostafa put the finishing touches on the Tribe's 85-64 win with a deep three-pointer from the left wing in the closing minute.

W&M finished the night shooting 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the floor, hitting better than 50 percent for the 14th time overall and 10th in the last 15 games. The Tribe connected on 10-of-22 (45 percent) from three-point range, its 13th game of double-digit triples. They also shot 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the charity stripe.
