The No. 19-ranked William & Mary field hockey teams saw its run to the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Championship come to close on Sunday afternoon at the hands of the defending national championship and No. 8-ranked Delaware, 3-0. After a scoreless first half, the Blue Hens (16-4) scored less than a minute into the second, and despite a number of quality chances from the Tribe (13-7), UD added two more to walk away with its fifth-straight CAA Championship.
After the game, W&M had three players named to the CAA All-Tournament team. Senior captain
Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) repeated on the team, becoming just the third player in school history to make multiple all-tournament teams. Making their first tournament teams were sophomore defenders
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) and
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.).
The Green and Gold nearly jumped in front in the seventh minute. Senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) sent a long pass from the right flank into senior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) inside the top right side of the circle. Lloyd circled a defender and ripped a shot toward the center of the cage, but Delaware goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans kicked it away.
The Blue Hens jumped in front with an opportunistic goal in the opening minute of the second half. The ball was lost in a scrum along the left side of the circle before popping out to a wide-open Taylor Lister who flipped it in to give UD a 1-0 cushion.
It looked as though the Tribe would find the equalizer in the 40th minute. Sophomore
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) worked the ball along the left side of the end line and centered a pass to Lloyd. The senior forward's shot from in close beat the UD goalkeeper, but Blue Hen defender Sarah Horgan got a stick to it to keep it out the cage. Hooper then had another opportunity later in the half, driving deep to the near post, but her shot was deflected just wide of the cage.
Delaware converted penalty corner opportunities in the 54th and 59th minutes to put the game on ice. Greta Nauck scored both goals, deflecting in the first from the left side, while shooting in the second from just inside the circle on the left.
