Women's Soccer Falls to Top-Seeded Hofstra in CAA Semifinals

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.  – The William & Mary women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to top-seeded and host Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association Semifinals on Friday night in Hempstead, N.Y. With the decision, the Tribe ends its season at 8-10-2, while the Pride improve to 14-3-2, and advanced to the CAA Championship against Northeastern on Sunday.

Hofstra scored the match's lone goal in the 63rd minute. Off of a corner kick sent in by Monique Iannella, Madeline Anderson headed the ball towards the goal line. Lucy Porter raced to the loose ball and put her shot into the empty net.

The Pride's Jenna Borresen and Ashley Wilson combined to make three saves and preserve the Hofstra shutout and the victory.

W&M's best chance came late in the first half. Junior Mackenzie Kober played a pass to the top of the 18, where redshirt sophomore Sarah Segan took over. Segan took a few steps into the box, but fired her shot right into Borresen.

Quotable
"We rarely got into a rhythm. The pace was frantic and not conducive to good soccer. We defended very well and only conceded a scrappy goal when we failed to clear a corner." – Head women's soccer coach John Daly

Inside the Numbers
- Hofstra held an 18-4 advantage in shots, which included a 10-2 advantage in the second half.
- The Pride also held a 5-3 advantage in shots on-goal.
- Both teams attempted three corners, apiece.
- Four different players – seniors Sami Grasso and Elysse Branton, redshirt sophomore Sarah Segan, and redshirt freshman Lauren Kelly – fired the Tribe's shots.

Notes
This was W&M's sixth straight appearances in the league's semifinal … W&M is the lone team in the CAA to appear in six straight league semifinals … Redshirt senior Grace Smith made a save, while senior Samantha Johnson recorded a pair of stops as they each played a half in the contest … The Tribe defense recorded its fourth team save of the season.
