RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 18, 2017)—The William & Mary football team rallied back from a 10-point deficit in the second half but fell at Richmond, 27-20, in the 128th meeting between the two programs on Saturday afternoon.
UR (6-5, 4-4) quarterback Kyle Lauletta provided the game-winning score when he found the end zone from 1-yard out with 3:59 remaining in the fourth quarter. The touchdown capped a 14-play, 75-yard drive that lasted 7:13 and was aided by a pass interference penalty on a third-and-14 from W&M's 15-yard line.
The Tribe (2-9, 0-8) utilized a pair of interceptions – coming from defensive end
Gavin Johnson and linebacker
Nate Atkins – to rally back from a 20-10 deficit late in the third quarter. McKee narrowed the margin to 20-17 with a 6-yard touchdown run with no time remaining in the third quarter, while placekicker
Kris Hooper made a 31-yard field goal with 11:12 left to knot the score. The pair of scoring drives combined to cover just 65 yards, as both interceptions gave W&M possession in UR territory.
W&M drove to the Spiders' 44-yard line on its final possession following Lauletta's touchdown but turned the ball over on downs when McKee was sacked for a 10-yard loss on a fourth-and-10 with 1:58 remaining. UR was then able to run out the clock.
Tribe Standouts
McKee scored both of the Tribe's touchdowns, as he posted scoring runs of 1 yard and 6 yards during the third quarter.
Hooper accounted for the remainder of W&M's points, as he connected on two of his three field goal attempts.
Running back
Nate Evans finished with 81 rushing yards on 16 carries and a team-high 127 all-purpose yards.
Linebacker
Arman Jones led the Tribe with nine tackles and a sack, while Atkins and Johnson both came up big with interceptions that led to points.
Inside the Numbers
UR outgained the Tribe, 423-280. While the Spiders owned a narrow edge on the ground (202-187) it piled up a significant advantage through the air (221-93) and averaged 17.0 yards per completion.
All four of UR's touchdown drives covered more than 70 yards, while only one of W&M's scoring marches was longer than 43 yards.
W&M won the turnover battle (2-0) and did not commit a turnover for just the second time this season.
The Opposition
Tailback Xavier Goodall was named the game's Most Valuable Player after rushing for 180 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns.
Lauletta completed 13 of 19 passes for 221 yards with a score, while wideout Cortrell Simpson recorded three catches for 121 yards, which included a 74-yard touchdown reception early in the third quarter to give UR a 13-3 lead.
Linebacker Justin Rubin and safety Samari Springs both totaled a team-high nine tackles, while defensive end Brandon Waller recorded 1.5 sacks and 3.5 TFL.
