WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team lost a heartbreaking 2-1 double-overtime match to Columbia in the First Round of the NCAA College Cup on Thursday night at Martin Family Stadium. With the decision, the Tribe ends its season at 11-5-5, while the Lions, which advance to the second round to take on top-seeded Wake Forest on Sunday, Nov. 18, improves to 12-2-3.
W&M jumped on the board first with a marker in the 31st minute. Sophomore
Reeves Trott found junior
Ryder Bell, who drove to about 30 yards out. The junior rocketed his shot off of the right post, but got the home roll. Bell's seventh goal of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
Columbia found the equalizer in the 77th minute off of a corner kick. Nike Azuma sent a quick attempt into the front of the net. Zach Morant headed the ball down and into the goal, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Tribe had a couple of quality chances in the second half, but could not find a second goal. Junior
Antonio Bustamante just missed making it 2-0, sending a shot just wide of the right post from 12 yards out. Columbia goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira, who finished with six saves, made a huge stop in the 86th minute to send it to extra time. A deflected cross fell to the foot of senior William Eksay, but Castanheira blocked the shot, and Eskay's follow up went high of the frame.
The Lions found the winner in the 103rd minute again off of a corner kick. John Denis played the corner kick into the far post, and Alex Bagerl headed it off the post. The rebound played right back to the middle of the six where Kynan Rocks toe-poked it in for the winner.
