Days' Double Leads #18 Tribe Past Towson, 3-1

Story Links

The No. 18 William & Mary field hockey team won its fourth in a row on Friday night, taking down Towson on the road 3-1.  With the win, the Tribe improved to 9-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Tigers fell to 1-12 (0-3 CAA).  This is the third time ever that W&M has been 3-0 to start conference play, and the first since 2005.

The Tribe took control of the match early, earning a penalty corner in the first three minutes and then another in the eighth minute.  As the defense flew out on the second corner and the play began to break down, sophomore Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) fired a shot from high in the circle towards the far post.  Her classmate Cata Days (Buenos Aires, Argentina) intercepted it right in front of Towson's goalkeeper, and redirected it under her straight into the back of the boards.  That's how the score stood as the halftime horn sounded, despite an 8-3 shot advantage for W&M, and despite four penalty corners for the Tigers.

The second half started almost opposite, with Towson drawing even on a corner in the 41st minute.  Paige Zaleppa made a short pass to her nearest teammate, Katie McNeel, who was able to score on a shot from the edge of the circle on the elbow.  W&M kept ratcheting up the pressure and intensity, however, proving why they're ranked and leaving Towson unable to respond.  In the 52nd minute, senior Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) worked into the circle and took a nifty back-handed shot that was saved out of the air by Towson's keeper almost 10 feet off the line.  She wasn't able to control the rebound however, and Days was there for the scoop and score to regain the 2-1 advantage.  Almost 10 minutes later precisely, W&M added an insurance goal, with Jenny McCann (Annandale, Va.) driving the baseline before passing the ball up to Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) with the goalkeeper on her hip.  Showing post moves that would make the basketball team proud, Lloyd spun and fired a shot off the keeper's pads and in to set the final margin.

Inside the Numbers
- The Tribe outshot the Tigers, 16-6, with identical 8-3 halves.  Shots on goal were similarly lopsided, 12-4 in favor of the Green and Gold.
- W&M pulled away on penalty corners in the second half, 6-2, to lead that category 10-6 for the game.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) made three saves for the Tribe in picking up her ninth win of the year, matching her season total from 2016.  On the other end of the field, Emilee Woodall added nine more saves for an NCAA-leading total of 143 saves this season.
- Five cards were issued in the game (three green to W&M, two yellow to Towson), half-again as many as all of the Tribe's first 12 games combined.

Notes
This was Cata Days' first career multi-goal game ... She now has four goals and two assists on the year ... Cassidy Goodwin's assist on the first goal of the game was also her first of the season ... With Days and Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) each accounting for three game-winning goals this season, this is the first time since 2003 that W&M has had multiple players win at least three games in the same year.
