WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team produced its best all-around performance of the season to capture an exhilarating 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10) victory over Colonial Athletic Association rival Elon on Wednesday evening in Kaplan Arena. The Tribe (5-20, 2-9 CAA) hit over .270 and totaled just four errors in the last two sets to earn the five-set comeback win against the Phoenix (14-12, 3-8 CAA).
W&M battled through six ties and four lead changes to take the first set. Senior
Sydney Biniak hammered five kills and junior
Heather Pippus crushed four more in game one to lift the Green and Gold to an early match lead. However, Elon quickly recovered and claimed the next two sets to go up 2-1 in the match.
In the fourth set, the Tribe generated a .317 attack percentage and committed just three hitting errors to prolong the contest. A 3-0 spurt late in the stanza allowed W&M to take a 19-15 advantage. Elon battled and made it a two-point difference, 23-21, on a Kam Terry kill. Nonetheless, Pippus nailed the Tribe's last two points to force a fifth set.
W&M maintained its discipline in the final period with only one attack misfire en route to completing the comeback bid. Elon grabbed a 4-2 lead, before the Tribe sparked a 5-0 run to gain the scoring advantage. A
Julia Brown hammer gave the Green and Gold an 11-8 margin, before she capped a 4-1 jolt with the match-winning kill.
Inside the Numbers
- W&M recoded double-digit blocks with 12 for the third time this year. The Phoenix finished the match with just four.
- A quartet of Tribe players tallied 10-pus kills. Biniak led the way with 20 kills, while Brown and Pippus posted 13 apiece. Rookie
Kate Dedrick also got in on the action with 12 kills, including a .387 hitting efficiency.
- A trio of
Katie Turner, Lauren Moussaid and Pippus earned double-digit digs. Turner notched a season-high 27 digs and Pippus factored in on 12 more to post a double-double. Moussaid registered 10-plus for the eighth time with 16 on the night.
- Junior
Katie Kemp filled up the stat sheet with a team-best 31 assists, eight digs and three service aces. Sophomore
Autumn Brenner finished just short of a double-double behind 23 assists and nine digs.
- Freshman
Denisha Shaw tied her season-high seven blocks, all of them assisted.
