NEWARK, Del. (Oct. 14, 2017)—The William & Mary football team posted a strong defensive performance but fell at Delaware, 17-0, on Saturday afternoon.
W&M (2-4, 0-3) limited UD (4-2, 2-1) to just 195 total yards and 10 first downs but finished with only 196 yards of its own and turned the ball over three times.
Delaware's three scoring drives combined to cover just 52 yards, as it recorded 10 of its 17 points off turnovers.
The final score marked W&M's first shutout since falling at UD, 21-0, in 2011.
Tribe Standouts
Linebacker
Josh Dulaney, linebacker
Nate Atkins and safety
Corey Parker totaled nine tackles apiece to lead W&M defensively, while Dulaney added 1.5 TFL. Defensive end
Gavin Johnson also came up big with five stops and W&M's lone sack.
Tailback
Albert Funderburke led the Tribe's rushing attack with 46 yards on 12 carries, while
Nate Evans finished with 41 yards on 10 carries.
Wideout
Daniel Kuzjak was the Tribe's leading receiver with four catches for 33 yards.
Inside the Numbers
En route to holding UD to just 195 total yards 10 first downs, W&M's defense limited UD to no more than 20 yards on 11 of its 14 drives. Additionally, none of Delaware's possessions covered more than 38 yards.
W&M held the Blue Hens to just 78 passing yards.
The Tribe continued its outstanding third down defense and held the Blue Hens to just 3 of 16.
The Tribe was penalized just one time for 15 yards, while UD was whistled for just four penalties for 25 yards.
The Opposition
Delaware quarterback J.P. Caruso completed 7 of 20 passes for 78 yards and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to wideout Jamie Jarmon early in the second quarter to give the Blue Hens an early 7-0 lead.
Running back Kani Kane led the Blue Hens on the ground with 49 yards on 12 carries and posted a 1-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter for the game's final score.
Defensively, Nasir Adderley returned an interception 45 yards and recovered a muffed punt that led to Kane's touchdown.
