The William & Mary field hockey team mounted a spirited comeback in the second half on Sunday against Rutgers, but came up just shy in a 2-1 loss in the home-opener. The Tribe moves to 0-3 on the year after the match, while the Scarlet Knights evened their record 2-2.
After Rutgers controlled the run of play in the first half, taking 11 shots and three corners to build a 2-0 lead, W&M came out of the intermission much stronger and in control. The second half saw the shots become much closer, only 8-7 in favor of the visitors, while W&M held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
The last of those provided the breakthrough. Junior
Cammie Lloyd's (Midlothian, Va.) shot was saved, but the rebound to the stick of senior captain
Maria Jose Pastor (Burke, Va.), who hammered it through to the back of the net. That was Pastor's second goal of the season. In goal, freshman
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) made four more saves.
William & Mary is back in action next weekend, with another split trip. On Friday, Sept. 9, the Tribe will play at Georgetown, before returning home to face Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 11.
