The William & Mary field hockey team put everything together in the right way on Friday night, blanking Richmond on the road 3-0 for its first win over the Spiders since 2007. The Tribe improved to 2-4 overall with the victory, while Richmond fell to the same mark on the year.
Tribe junior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) had a big day once again, scoring each of the team's first two goals. That raised her season-totals to a team-best five goals and 11 points overall. Senior
Olivia Hajek (Charlottesville, Va.) had the final tally for W&M, her first of the year.
Also of note was the Green and Gold defense, which pitched its first shutout of the year. It took seven saves to reach that point, five of them coming from rookie goalkeeper
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.). The other two both came courtesy of junior
Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.), who made defensive saves in both halves in addition to assisting on Lloyd's second goal of the game. Menges' two defensive saves in one contest are tied for second all-time at W&M.
For the game, the Tribe won despite facing a 13-11 deficit in shots, and a 9-4 disadvantage in penalty corners. The second half was even more lopsided in corners, as Richmond had eight corners called versus just three for the Green and Gold. That was helped in part by the Spiders playing the final 10 minutes without a goalkeeper, instead opting to play an extra field player, but that strategy was foiled by Menges, Connor, and the rest of the Tribe defense.
William & Mary continues its weekend roadtrip with a drive down to Davidson for a 1 p.m. match-up on Sunday.
