Mackenzie Kober's Golden Goal Leads Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Mackenzie Kober's golden goal in the 94th minute lifted the Tribe women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Hampton Roads rival Old Dominion on Thursday night in Norfolk. Redshirt junior Grace Smith tied a career-high with six as she recorded her second career shutout in the victory. With the win, the Tribe improves 3-1, while the Monarchs drop to 1-4.

The game was delayed for about 30 minutes in the fourth minute due to serve weather in the area.

Both teams combined for just four shots in the first half, but Old Dominion was able to fire three shots on target. Krista Moisio, Kira Laurento, and Thyla Peterson all put shots for the Monarchs, but Smith was there for the save.

W&M's lone shot of the period came in the 38th minute. Junior Sami Grasso found some space and uncorked a shot, but it was blocked by a Monarch defender.

The Tribe came out of the gates with a furry in the second half. Senior Haley Kavanaugh fired a shot that had to be cleared off the line for an ODU team save in the 47th minute. A minute later, Grasso just missed a goal as her shot rolled wide.

ODU followed the Green and Gold's pressure with a pair of shots of its own, but both were off target. Laurento missed wide left in the 60th minute, before Kathryn Hill missed wide in the 64th.

The Monarchs had the final three chances of regulation, but couldn't put any away thanks to a strong effort by Smith. Hogan and Hill each put shots on frame that had to be turned away, before Iris Atcherhof missed wide in the 90th minute.

Following an Old Dominion foul, junior Haley Kent lined up a free kick four minutes into overtime. The ball landed in the box, and Kober was able to get some space. She fired her shot into the back of the net, giving W&M the 1-0 lead.

ODU finished the match with 14-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on-goal. Individually, Grasso led the offense with a  pair of shots.

The Green and Gold close out the weekend as they return to Williamsburg to host No. 16 Virginia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
