WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Maryland's Jarena Harmon registered a hat trick to lead the Terrapins to a 3-2 victory over the William & Mary women's soccer team in the home opener at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Freshman
Sarah Segan and senior
Kady Kriner tallied markers for the Green and Gold. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 1-1-0, while the Terps improve to 1-1-1.
Just two minutes into the match, W&M scored the first goal of the night. Junior
Rachel Moore sent a long ball that sent Segan free into the box with a one-versus-one with the goalkeeper. Segan buried her chance into the middle of the goal. Her second goal of the season lifted the Tribe to a 1-0 lead.
Not even four minutes later the Terrapins evened the score as Harmon was able to win a ball from the goalkeeper. With no one to beat, she scored into the wide-open goal making it 1-1.
Harmon gave Maryland its first lead in the 14th minute of the match. This time on a clearance attempt, she stepped in front and deflected it into the goal for her second tally of the evening.
W&M fought back and leveled the score before halftime with a 26th minute goal. Off of a long throw-in by junior
Haley Kent, Segan ran down the ball in the box. The rookie played the ball to the middle of the box. Waiting there was Kriner, who planted the ball into middle right of the net. Kriner's first career goal knotted the score 2-2.
In the 63rd minute, Harmon struck again for the Terps this time with the winner. Marisa Knott sent a through ball that found Harmon. As she collected it a collision between a pair of Tribe players allowed for a tap in goal, completing the hat trick.
The Tribe had a number of chances to level the score in the closing 27 minutes. The best two looks came off of the foot of Segan, who had back-to-back chances in the 65th and 66th minute. The first one rolled just past the right post, before Katelyn Jensen made a save on the second.
Despite the score line, W&M held a 13-6 advantage in shots, and a 7-3 lead in shots on-goal. The Green and Gold also took nine corners in comparison to Maryland's one. Segan led the Tribe with four shots, while junior
Sami Grasso had a pair.
