CHARLESTON, S.C. – The William & Mary baseball fell 7-2 to College of Charleston in its first game at the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament in Charleston, S.C. on Thursday afternoon. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 25-29, while the Cougars improve to 31-24-1 overall.
Redshirt freshman
Kyle Wrighte led the Tribe with a pair of hits, including his first career homer. Junior
Ryder Miconi also collected a pair of hits in the setback.
Charleston jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Luke Manzo led off the inning with a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. An infield single by Dupree Hart put runners on the corners with an out. After an out Hart stole second, before Erven Roper squeaked a single up the middle, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars tacked on another two-out run in the top of the sixth inning. Tommy Richter led off the inning with a single, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. A two-out single from Manzo plated the run.
For the third consecutive inning, CofC rallied for a run, plating two in the top of the seventh. Ryan Brown led off the inning with a double, followed by a single by Hart. A wild pitch allowed for Ryan Brown to score, before a two-out single by Bradley Dixon gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
An unearned run in the top of the eighth inning kept the Cougars scoring streak alive. Alex Pastorious led off the inning with a double, moving to third on a groundout. With two outs, Ryan Brown reached on an error, scoring the run.
William & Mary got on the board with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. Wrighte led off the frame with his first career homer over the left field wall.
The Tribe added another run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Back-to-back walks to senior
Charley Gould and
Hunter Smith started the rally. An errant throw on the back end of a double play allowed for Gould to score, and cut the lead to 7-2.
Junior
Nick Brown was saddled with his seven loss of the season. He went five innings allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
Bailey Ober tossed 8.1 innings for Charleston in his seventh win of the season. He allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
No. 2-seeded W&M will look to keep its season alive tomorrow, Friday, May 27, in the loser's bracket. The Tribe will play the winner of No. 4-seeded James Madison or No. 5-seeded Northeastern at 3:30 PM at the Ballpark at Patriots Point.
