CHARLESTON, S.C. – The William & Mary baseball team rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning, evening a three-game Colonial Athletic Association at the College of Charleston with a 6-1 victory on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 25-27, 14-8 in CAA play, while the Cougars drop to 28-24-1, 11-12 in league action.
Freshman
Bodie Sheehan turned a quality start for the Green and Gold, earning his fourth victory season. He went seven innings, scattering three hits, allowing only an unearned run, while he struck out four.
Offensively, senior
Charley Gould led the Tribe with three hits and two RBI. Freshman
Hunter Smith and sophomore
Cullen Large each enjoyed multiple hit game as well.
For the second straight game, W&M jumped on the board first with a run in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles from Gould and freshman
Hunter Smith started the rally. A sacrifice bunt by junior
Ryder Miconi put both runners in scoring position, before an RBI groudout by senior
Josh Smith gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
Charleston tied the game on an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Morgan Phillips led off the inning with a single. After two outs, Phillips got caught too far off first, but an errant throw allowed him to reach second. A single up the middle by Dupree Hart tied the score.
The Tribe added four runs in the top of the eighth inning, regaining the lead. Freshman
Owen Socher led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. After Large bunted him over and reached on an error, Gould singled up the middle, giving the Tribe the lead back. The next batter,
Hunter Smith reached on a fielder's choice, but it allowed Large to score. After Miconi singled,
Josh Smith reached on a fielder's choice, but the throw to first was errant and allowed the fourth run of the inning to score. Freshman
Kyle Wrighte drove in the final run of the frame on a single to left, giving the Tribe a 5-1 lead.
W&M added an insurance run in the visitor's half of the ninth. Socher started the rally with a one-out walk, moving to second on a single by Large. Gould followed with single off of the wall that scored Socher, but he was tagged out trying to advance it to a double.
Sophomore
Robert White and senior
Joseph Gaouette pitched the final two innings of scoreless baseball. Gaouette recorded a strikeout in his scoreless ninth inning.
Justin Baker was saddled with his third loss of the season for Charleston. He tossed 0.2 innings, allowing three hits, four runes (one earned). Offensively, the Cougars were limited to just four hits, and only one extra base hit.
The rubber game of the series and the final game of the regular season is set for Saturday, May 21. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
