MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The William & Mary baseball team could not overcome a four-run first inning falling 6-1 at West Virginia in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 24-26, while the Mountaineers improve to 31-19.
Redshirt freshman
Kyle Wrighte led the Tribe with a pair of hits and scored the team's lone run. Classmate
Hunter Smith drove in the Tribe's lone run on the afternoon.
West Virginia jumped on the board for four of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brad Zarbinsky led off the inning by reaching on an error, and then stole second. After a walk to Kyle Davis and sacrifice bunt, Ivan Vera doubled to center, clearing the bases. After an out, Ray Guerrini was hit by pitch, before KC Huth doubled to center, giving the Mountaineers a 4-0 lead.
A two-out rally in the bottom of the third added another run for the Mountaineers. With two outs Jordan Cramer singled, before a hit by a pitch and a walk loaded the bases. A passed ball allowed for Cramer to cross the plate.
The Mountaineers added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Guerrini led off the inning with a single to centerfield. Huth followed with a double to center that scored Guerrini from first and made the lead 6-0.
W&M scored its lone run in the top of the eighth inning. Wrighte led off the frame by a reaching on a bunt single. After an out and a walk to junior
Ryder Miconi, both runners moved up 90 feet on a balk. The next batter,
Hunter Smith sent a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Wrighte.
Junior
Daniel Powers was charged with his fourth loss of the season. He went 4.1 innings allowing six runs, but just two were earned. Sophomore
Charlie Fletcher, junior
John Yoest, and freshman
Jason Waldman pitched the final 3.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Conner Dotson picked up the win for the Mountaineers. He went five innings allowing just four hits. Three WVU players collected two hits, while Huth had three RBI and Vera had two.
The College closes out the regular season with a three-game series at the College of Charleston. The set gets underway on Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m.
