NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 36 William & Mary women's tennis team closed out the regular season with its seventh nationally-ranked win of the year, downing No. 62 Old Dominion, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. W&M (15-6) won four singles matches, including each of the top three spots, while sophomore
Maria Groener won her seventh straight at No. 6 to clinch the Green and Gold victory.
After Old Dominion (12-6) took the doubles point to open the match, W&M won the top three singles positions to move in front for good. Freshman
Lauren Goodman dropped just three games in routing Adriana Rajkovic, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 for her sixth-straight victory. The Tribe rookie, who won for the ninth time in her last 10 matches, improved to 16-6 overall and 9-2 at the third post.
Senior
Elizaveta Nemchinov notched her 85th career singles win with a triumph at the top spot to give W&M a 2-1 lead. She tallied a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Borislava Botusharova, who was ranked as high as No. 82 nationally this season and entered the match at 8-1 in singles play. Nemchinov pushed her season ledger to 18-8 and 12-6 at No. 1.
Junior
Marie Faure made it a clean sweep of the top three positions for the Tribe. The No. 123-ranked player in the country snapped Nataliya Vlasova's five-match win streak with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph at the No. 2 spot. Faure won her second straight and fifth in the last six matches, while extending her season ledger to 14-6.
After the Monarchs drew within 3-2 via a three-set win at No. 4, Groener put to rest any chance of an ODU victory with a win at No. 6. The Tribe sophomore rolled past Natalya Malenko in the opening set without dropping a game, 6-0, before clinching the Tribe victory with a 6-4 triumph in the second. Groener, who won her seventh straight, picked up her second clinching win of the season and improved to 15-11 overall.
The Tribe will likely be the No. 1 seed in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, set for April 21-24. Elon University will host the event at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. W&M will likely face the winner of the No. 8/No. 9 match-up in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 22. The CAA semifinals and championship are slated 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24, respectively.
