RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 70 William & Mary men's tennis team fell on the road at former Colonial Athletic Association rival VCU, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore
Ryan Newman claimed the Tribe's point with a victory at the No. 6 position. The Tribe fell to 12-7 on the year, while VCU improved to 16-7.
The Rams took the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions came down to the wire. The VCU duo of Louis Ishizaka and Arvid Noren pulled out a 6-4 win over senior
Scott Huang and sophomore
Christian Cargill at the second spot to clinch the initial point of the match. Sophomore
Lars de Boer and junior
Damon Niquet were locked in a 5-4 battle at No. 3 with Michal Voscek and Catalin Fifea when the match was abandoned with the doubles point decided.
After VCU posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Newman got W&M on the board with a victory at the sixth spot. The Tribe sophomore won the opening set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), and then rolled to a 6-0 triumph in the second over Philip Mobius. Newman, who joined W&M as a transfer for N.C. State in January, picked up his second dual-match win of the season.
The final three matches on court were all close. Junior
Aidan Talcott was on the verge of closing out a win at No. 4, leading by a set, 7-6, and up 5-4 in the second against Fifea. At No. 5, Niquet was in a close tilt with Ishizaka down up set, but closing in on a second-set tiebreaker. Unfortunately for the Tribe, the Rams notched a tight win at the top spot to cement the team triumph. Voscek outlasted Cargill, 6-4, 7-5, for his 15th win of the year.
The Tribe wraps up its six-match road swing when it travels to No. 48 Old Dominion on Saturday, April. 9. The match carries a 2 p.m. start time from the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The contest will be run concurrent to the Tribe women's tennis match with ODU at the facility.
